CRICKET’S WORLD CUP FINAL 2019

There’s great excitement at Lord’s today –
It’s the final of cricket’s World Cup.
Jason and Jonny have paved the way –
Surely England’s time is up!

We’ve walloped the Aussies quite out of sight,
And Kohli’s men took a sound beating;
So our gremlins appear to have taken flight,
Any lingering doubts are retreating.

New Zealand are batting, but finding it tough,
With Woakesy and Jofra’s tight bowling.
But they reckon two-forty could well be enough,
So our victory hopes need controlling.

They manage to muster just two forty-one,
A score they have hopes of defending;
But surely our ‘class acts’, when all’s said and done,
Will give us victorious ending?

But Trent is now giving no room for quick scoring
And Henry is making us climb,
And wickets are falling – the Kiwis restoring
Their hopes of success, all the time.
It seems like New Zealand are winning the day;
Our grand hopes once more have receded.
But Ben Stokes and Buttler now enter the fray –
How greatly their skills will be needed!

Then slowly these two will rekindle our hope,
While valuable boundaries are plundered –
But will our tail-enders be able to cope,
Now Josh Buttler has gone? we all wondered.
Just four balls remain, and still needing fifteen,
Though crucially Stokes is still facing.
He slog-sweeps a six over boundary clean,
To keep the crowd’s pulses all racing.

What happened the next ball you could not invent –
When straining to get home for two,
The throw hit the bat and, without his intent,
Away to the boundary it flew!

Now three needed from two, and the first scores just one,
So two to win from the last ball.
A single they manage, then Wood is undone,
So the final is TIED after all!

Right! Now for the SUPER OVER we’re up –
So Buttler and Stokes bat once more:
Surely fifteen’s enough to win us the Cup –
And to bring on that deafening roar?
Enter our Jofra to send down the siz
This incredible match to decide.
We know he can challenge the best with his tricks –
But he starts off by bowling a WIDE!

When he goes for a SIX they need seven from four:
It seems that New Zealand have won.
But our Archer fires straight, to limit the score,
So it’s three now from two – all’s not done!
A single next ball, and it’s now ‘déja vu’,
As happened before in the match-
New Zealand will win if they manage a two:
Will we witness another strange ‘catch’?

His last ball is full; off his legs Guptill clips,
As out to midwicket it speeds;
Roy’s thrown in to Buttler now rises and dips:
Buttler fathers – one run-out he needs.
He crashes the bails off, the batsman’s RUN OUT –
Lords RPTURE, all banners unfurled.
Magnificent heroes, all England will shout;
Superb – WE’RE ON TOP OF THE WORLD!
